The defensive unit — Walker Zimmerman marshaling the shape, the midfield dropping into a compact block — held without drama. And then on 82 minutes, Malik Tillman stepped over a free kick 22 yards out, struck it cleanly over the wall, and made it 2-0. That was the game. Bosnia got a couple of late corners and nothing more.

One other moment worth noting: Pulisic had the ball in the net in the second half, but VAR ruled it out for offside by the thinnest of margins. For NJ bettors who had Pulisic on the anytime scorer ticket, that call stings. It was a legitimate finish. The technology disagreed by a shoulder's width.

The Balogun red card is going to be litigated for days. The second yellow was for simulation — the referee decided Balogun had gone down to earn a foul rather than genuinely being caught. Watch the replay: there is contact. Whether it is enough to go down is subjective. In knockout football those calls tend to live in the gray zone where the referee's read is final, and this one will not be overturned on appeal. Balogun is suspended for the Round of 16 against Belgium on July 7.

That is a significant loss. Balogun has been the focal point of the USMNT attack in this tournament — strong in the press, a genuine threat with both feet, and a striker who gives the American midfield an outlet when possession breaks down. Replacing him means either Pepi stepping into a knockout environment for the first time this summer, or Pochettino reshaping the attack to run Pulisic centrally and push Tillman into a wider role. Neither option is clean. But Tillman's 82nd-minute free kick proves one thing: he can handle big moments.

Two from five. The moneyline was the core bet and it hit. The under was the secondary call noted in the preview — Bosnia parks deep and USA grinds it out — and that read paid off at plus money. The over and BTTS missed because Bosnia never found a way through a defense that kept its shape even while down a man. The Pulisic scorer result is the hardest one to sit with: he scored, VAR erased it, and there is nothing to do but move on. That is tournament football.

For those communities the result was bittersweet. Bosnia did not embarrass themselves. They were limited, not demolished, and they held a ten-man USA scoreless for 18 minutes after the Balogun red card. There is dignity in that. The 2002 parallel is worth carrying. That team reached the quarterfinals and lost to Germany in a match the U.S. genuinely competed in. The 2026 side is deeper, more technically complete, and playing on home soil with a home-country crowd generating noise that genuinely moves the atmosphere in these West Coast venues. The question is no longer whether they belong in the knockout rounds. It's how far this bracket actually takes them.
