NJ June 2026: Sports Wagering Down 37.7% YoY as NBA Finals and World Cup Patrons Cash Out
NJ sports wagering gross revenue fell 37.7% YoY in June 2026 to $57.3M, the largest single-month decline in years. Handle rose 16%; the drop reflects patron winnings on NBA Finals and FIFA World Cup group-stage matches. FanDuel held 41% online market share YTD; bet365 grew fastest (+77.7% MoM, +42.4% YTD).
The NJ Division of Gaming Enforcement released June 2026 figures this week, with sports wagering gross revenue coming in at $57.3M; down 37.7% year-over-year and the largest single-month decline the state has posted since the market matured in 2021. But the topline masks a very different picture underneath: total handle rose 16% YoY. Books took more bets than in June 2025, but paid out substantially more. The DGE explicitly attributed the drop to patron winnings on the NBA Finals and FIFA World Cup group-stage matches; both are known variance events where bettors historically outperform the closing line.
The Retail Book Went Negative
For the first time in the modern NJ market, sportsbook lounge revenue was negative: -$672,671 for the month. Every retail betting operation, from FanDuel’s Meadowlands flagship to the Atlantic City casino lounges, collectively paid out more than they took in. Year-to-date lounge revenue stands at $9.4M vs $15.5M for the same period in 2025 (-39.2%), a meaningful indicator that retail sportsbooks are under pressure even before any smoking-ban legislation takes effect.
FanDuel Extends Lead but Loses Ground
FanDuel posted $25.0M in June online sportsbook revenue (down 30.2% YoY on the same weak-hold dynamic that hit every book) but YTD FanDuel stands at $206.6M; comfortably #1 with roughly 41% of the online market. DraftKings reported $131.3M YTD (26%), with Fanatics ($40.8M, 8.1%), BetMGM ($40.4M, 8.0%), and bet365 ($39.9M, 7.9%) essentially tied for third through fifth. The top five brands now control 91% of NJ online sportsbook revenue YTD. See our FanDuel vs DraftKings comparison.
bet365 Is the Standout Grower
bet365 reported $6.66M in June alone, up 38.9% YoY, and YTD $39.9M; up 42.4% versus the same period in 2025. The European brand has essentially closed the gap on Fanatics and BetMGM in six months. bet365’s strengths (soccer market depth and industry-best live betting) line up almost perfectly with the FIFA World Cup, which kicked off June 11 at MetLife Stadium. Expect the momentum to continue through the July 19 final.
Hard Rock Bet Also Outperforming
Hard Rock Bet reported $1.78M in June online sportsbook revenue (+4.1% YoY) and $9.5M YTD (+20.0%). The Atlantic City brand continues to gain share as its rebranded post-2023 product matures. Retail sportsbook lounge at Hard Rock AC held up better than the AC average through the difficult June for lounges.
The Struggling Outliers
theScore Bet’s post-ESPN-BET-rebrand slide continues: $8.0M YTD vs $16.5M same period 2025; down 51.7% YoY. The PENN Entertainment brand has yet to find traction with its new positioning. DraftKings was the biggest hit brand for June specifically ($13.7M vs $24.3M in June 2025, -43.7%), suggesting DraftKings’ heavier prop-market exposure amplified the NBA Finals + World Cup patron-winnings effect.
Tax Take Still Substantial
The 19.75% online sports betting tax and 8.5% retail lounge tax generated $12.5M in state revenue for June alone. YTD, sports wagering taxes have generated $107.3M for NJ state coffers, and total gaming taxes (casino, internet gaming, sports) sit at $564.4M YTD. Even at the reduced hold percentage, NJ’s tax revenue from the sector remains substantial.
Prime Sportsbook Moves to Harrah’s License
One structural change worth noting: Prime Sportsbook appears to have shifted its operating license from Ocean Casino Resort to Caesars Interactive Entertainment (CIENJ) under the Harrah's Atlantic City affiliate. Ocean's Prime line item shows carried-back losses only; the active Prime operation is now reporting revenue through CIENJ. The move consolidates smaller-brand activity under the larger CIENJ umbrella.
What to Watch in July
July should show the full FIFA World Cup Final effect (July 19 at MetLife) and the potential state windfall (or shortfall) from the pending A4838 World Cup surcharge if it passes. Books that lean into soccer (bet365, FanDuel) should benefit from record World Cup handle even if margins stay compressed. The next DGE release covering July numbers is expected mid-August.
